A letter to all Saab Owners from Jan Åke Jonsson

Dear Saab owner,

It is a great pleasure to announce that Spyker Cars N.V. now has acquired Saab Automobile AB from General Motors, thus securing our future.
I would like to thank you and all Saab customers, who have stood by us throughout this journey. Many of you have rallied, convoyed, blogged and otherwise helped carry the torch to save Saab. Your commitment underlines the remarkable strength of the Saab brand and bodes well for the future.

This new ownership has the full potential of bringing Saab successfully into the future, and ensuring that you as a customer will be able to experience true Saab cars that differ from the ordinary and offers a safe and a sporty fuel efficient driving experience paired with Scandinavian design and smart solution.

It also means that we, together with our dealer network, can continue to offer the best possible treatment and service, for you as well as for your Saab. We welcome you to come visit us - already today you can experience the latest addition to the Saab range — the new Saab 9-3X. Later this spring we will launch the all new Saab 9-5 Sedan and within the next 16 months we have more exciting news to introduce in the market -  the new Saab 9-5 SportCombi and the new Saab crossover 9-4X.

A new Saab era begins today. You can continue to follow our progress here on Saab Newsroom and you´re always welcome to experience it from the best place of all: behind the wheel of a Saab at your local dealer.

    Jan Åke -

We've met last year at Erik Carlssons 80th and I must say your positive and confident attitude as well as your obvious commitment have made an impression on me. I'm aware this announcment is only the start of a long journey and it won't all be plain sailing from here, but still feel massive congratulations are in order. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing some genuine excitement from the brand again, and if the next 9-3 offers half as much true Saab DNA as Victor says it will, I'll be delighted to re-join the fold...

    Kind regards,

If 2010 can be remembered for one thing, then it should mark an era where the internet brought people and nations together.

Thousands of people have worked hard to make this deal happen. Mr Muller and yourself may have done more than most. However there is one man who I believe has immersed himself into the sale of SAAB for over a year with no hidden agenda of some great reward. His passion for the Brand and his commitment to the SAAB community goes beyond the expectations of even the strongest SAABcore fans can fathom. I am very proud to find that you and SAAB have acknowledged his devotion and it is safe assume that without his efforts these rallies may never have happened.

Some say he survives on just 3 Hours of sleep a day and that he wrestles with real griffins on Sundays.

All I know is; he's called the SWADE.

I sure hope SAAB can be restored to its glory. I have owned 2, and still have a 9.3, However after dealing with ridiculous repairs that should not occur my last 2 cars purchased were not SAAB's. I did not even enter the showroom to look. I hope the Spyker ownership gives me a reason to return to a SAAB showroom.

Having owned a saab continuously since 1988,the quality of my current 2008 saab95 D saddens me,and fills me with trepitation for the future. Both front windows rattle, and the plastic panels in front of the outside mirrors have fallen off.I have had a 95 since 1997.The earlier cars were beautiful, but the quality deterioted with time. The quality of the internal plastics of my current car are very substandard.I look forward to the new model which will be a defining car for your company.

It was the really hard time for all of us. Some like Jan Ake J. or Victor M. have done a lot of work to save Saab. Some like us have done what we could (writing letters to all in charge of the deal and convoying) to show the world we want the "only good car brand" to survive.
I highly admire JAJ for his determination and not giving up.
And I am really happy my younger daughter (5 year old) doesn't ask me when I come home from work: "Dad, will they make Saabs?" as she already knows you will.

    Jan,
Thanks for the wonderful letter. You have learned a great lesson. This is what we Saabers do best, supporting the brand we love, rallying together to show we wanted Saab to live. Thanks for all you and VM did to make this happen. Please don't forget the US Dealers are in dire need of product and FP in order to survive and are stuggling to just stay open at this point. Many are not getting backing from the Banks to place their March orders. Many, that are single point in the business for generations. These people are the backbone of the US market and they need your help.It would be a shame to have won the battle, only to lose them at this time. As a 7 time Saab owner and former Salesperson, I know their plight and plead on their behalf.
As to WooDz's comment, he is referring to Steven Wade from Austraila who was witness to the signing. WooDz is right. Maybe a new 95 to Swade for all he did. If anyone deserves it, he does. He brought more people together under a single cause and still managed to keep us updated, email back communications (myself included, helped in the NYC TS Convoy and loved every minute putting the word out there) post links, comments, videos and anything that had to do with Saab. God bless his family for putting up with him and supporting his cause. My family was ready to kill me the weeks that lead up to the Convoys on the 17th and 24th, January. So I vote yes, and send one of those 95's to our Man of the Year, Swade.
If you ever have the time, the story of buying my 7th Saab ( 08 93 SportCombi pre-owned) is a doozy. The extremes I was willing to go through to buy one and be back driving Saab after a short stint driving Acura was crazy! At last now I love driving again. As a true Saab lover, I am also in the market to go back to selling cars again, only if they are Saab!!!

    Dear Jan,
Thank you so much for all of your work to save SAAB, and congratulations on your new SAAB car company. Please keep us surprised with new features, designs and technology. I own many SAABs, from a 1964 GT-850 to a 2007 9-3 convertible, and they all have outstanding design details and features that are so simply wonderful. All SAABs have a wonderful spirit that comes from the people of Trollhattan. To loose this would be a catastrophe. Thank you again, and I am patiently waiting for my next new SAAB.

Thank you for your dedication and hard work keeping Saab alive. After spending six months in Linköping during my college years and seeing so many Saabs in that town (at that time, Linköping Uni kept a brand new B205R in the lobby of the engineering wing), I came home to the States with a true appreciation for the Saab brand. Since then, i've owned two Saabs - can't find any other car out there that even comes close. Looking forward to buying a 3rd...

Truly enlighting to know SAAB will endure and continue to inspire and satify. I have purchased very recently (earlier this month) the amazing 9-3 Turbo X (2008) brand new from the Saudi Arabian dealer although speculation about the future of SAAB was not positive becasue I personally believe actions speak louder than words and i'm eager to learn more about the new 9-3 X debut. Congratulations once again and I put myself at your disposal whenver deeded to further promote the brand in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.

My thanks to everyone involved to save Saab and give them another chance. My only wish is the new 9-3 would be available sooner. I have to pick a new car, but the current 9-3 looks too much like the one I bought 5 years ago (althoug it feels and handles better). Congratulations to Jan Åke and all other employees at SAAB, congratulations to Trollhättan and Sweden.
I think it's crucial for SAAB to be kept as a swedish and scandinavian brand, as well as it's important that SAAB cars are developed and produced in Sweden. New models with the right SAAB dna must be developed. That's the right way to satisfy SAAB custumers.
However, the hardest part to keep SAAB alive, is yet to come. The new ownership must now turn words into action and show strength to run a niche car manufacturer. I'll keep my fingers crossed for SAAB.
    Kind regards,
Hans Jörgen, former SAAB 9-3 MY '05 owner, the one with the ultimate SAAB dashboard. The MY '07-?? GM influenced dashboard is rubbish with the SAAB dna completely gone. Just a small example showing how GM almost killed SAAB.

thank you for fighting relentlessly to keep the dream alive, alongside all management and workers.
Now that we are "free", please, we want SAABs that are distinctive in the design and technologically advanced, in line with the marque's history. All SAABists want REAL SAABs.
I shall travel to the Geneva show in March to see with my own eyes.
    Keep the good work.

what has happened over the last year, the efforts of several web sites like saabsunited.com has cemented the "community" worldwide.

I think, also in line with the use of modern web technology, that SAAB ought to focus also on this in its marketing efforts (it is also very cheap). A car manufacturer with a "community" of loyal friends, rather than only customers.

    Jan,
I took delivery of a 2009 9-3 Combi a few weeks ago. It is my 9th new Saab dating back to 1982. If Saab was closed, I was heading for a major depression. The leadership that you (and VM) brought to saving Saab is inspiring and a lesson that when things look bad, dedicated individuals can triumph. So from New York and Martha's Vineyard Island, I send you my thanks.

    Dear JAJ
I had my first SAAB experience during several months of training in a Swedish company in Stockholm in 1968 and 1969. I rented a SAAB 96, the most special car I had ever driven. But after being back to Switzerland, I unfortunately hadn’t been able to finance a Saab in those early years. In 1987 I could finally buy my first Saab 9000. Since then I owned another two Saab 9000 and buyed a 9-5 Aero SC in 2002, which was a wonderful car that I loved a lot. Due to the difficult period for Saab at the end of 2009 / beginning of 2010, I decided in February, before the take-over by Skyper, to buy a new Saab. I did so as an action of support for Saab plus the exceptionally service-minded dealer, whom I, in all those years, kept my loyalty to.
I believed that there will be a rescue for SAAB and therefore attended the „SAVE SAAB Convoy“ on 24 January 2010 in Interlaken, Switzerland.
Even though it was quite hard to give my 9-5 Aero away, a car I felt was like a faithful friend, since two weeks now I’m the proud owner of a 9-3X 2.0T SC. Not quite the same, though, but fantastic to drive. Though my dealer has no demo car anymore I may think that he already ordered a replacement in Trollhättan.
Now that it is settled that Saab can start into a new era, I feel a great gratification. I thank you and all SAAB staff for your incredible stamina during those difficult times. And I wish you all a remarkable future and the long overdue great success.
In memory of my own “Swedish” memory over 40 years ago, I have planned a trip to Sweden in the first half of June this year and I am going to visit the birthplace of my various Saabs and also the Saab museum in Trollhättan. I look forward to this trip and I am very proud to belong to the Saab-Community.
Having new perspectives now, I am sure that you and your employees will develop new future oriented products and I am curious what the upcoming years will lead us to. Me for my part will do the utter possible to continue to support Saab.
Please let me express again my greatest thank you for you and your team for your extraordinary commitment.
    Yours sincerely

Thank you Mr Ake for not forgetting that SAAB's are the best cars. I have had 6 and made a mistake after #3 and bought a Mercedes. I could not wait for my lease to be up and go back to my reliable and lovely car. When living in New York State I could depend on my SAAB in the snow and the confidence I had with it. In addition I know my SAAB dealer here in Orlando, Florida, will be so happy to keep his job. He has always looked out for me and the company as a whole has been fantastic. Here instead of snow we have rain in the summer and I still feel that great confidence and peace of mind. Keep up the good work.

Great news, I was introduced to SAAB with a 1994 900 and more recently a 9-3 ARC 2.0t. I really like the individuality of the brand and the comfort it offers on long trips here in Australia. Hope you will quickly establish distribution in this country, I think Lance Dixons are the obvious choice in Melbourne as a dealer, they have the longest period of association with the brand- ditch the Holden dealers-they did nothing but suppress sales in my opinion.

Dear Jan-Åke - I join all the others from the world over in thanking you for your brave effort and standing behind our beloved company through the difficult times. Now the happier times are ahead of us but we must keep up the spirit and do our share in helping to provide Saab with new customers so that people can buy the new cars soon.
My personal thought now - being a girl of barely 165cm tall - I would personally feel a bit lost and overwhelmed driving that magnificent new 9-5 or 9-3 so I am really looking forward to the development of the smaller 9-2 concept. (As are many others who already started enthusiastically contributing their ideas and sketches at SU... - so you see, we're all behind you, you just show us the way! :-)

Jan Åke it was your achievements that are perfectly encapsulated, as mentioned by others above by the Spyker company motto “Nulla tenaci invia est via”. Whilst we may not be privy to all the goings on it is clear that you continued to fight against the odds and even when expressly told not to. It is only as a result of this that there is a future to celebrate. So thank you to a Well-Built Swede –and yes to comments above for formal recognition at a national or European level!

Jan Åke, one also strongly feels that a new ‘business model’ has been ushered in –one where it is no longer just Saab the company or its dealers and suppliers that secure future success. There is a huge global community waiting to be tapped into to assist Saab on its new flight into the future.

Consider it as a Saab ‘eco-system’ where all stakeholders and in particular customers/friends are prepared to help in addition to the most obvious way. This is crucial given your limited resources.

This needs to be given a little more thought, though the ideas are already out there. I am sure I may speak for many in saying that we are keen to do more and this is just the beginning.

    Dear Mr. Ake,

I am proud to join my hands with all Saab owners to thank you for your hard work and dedication to save Saab. I strongly believed that Saab was going to survive so I bought my third Saab in October, 2009 despite the uncertainty at the time. I am really delighted to know that your current dealerships will also survive. Certainly, my Saab dealer in Orlando Florida will be glad to see the happy faces of Saab owners.

There is no doubt Saab will rebound as the car of choice for previous and future Saab owners. Please make a clean break from GM and allow Saab to be innovating again. Especially, changes from the new generic look to old unique Saab look will be a good thing.

Good luck and I am sure you will deliver the kind of vehicles that Saab owners have come to expect. Certainly, the Saab owner community worldwide will reward you with their fierce loyalty.

    Respectfully,

Dear Jan, I would be a happy owner of Saab, if I did not own a 3.0 L diesel version of 9-5. What is the cause of problems with this engine? How could you launch this engine after so many years of development and testing? You must have known that something is wrong...even Hirsch didn't want to upgrade this engine, because they knew it is a piece of scrap from the beginning...It will not affect Saabs credibility if you admit a fault now and release some solutions and recommendations...Good luck in the beginning of new era anyway!!!

I understand priority 1 will now be survival. But I really hope that Saab will come with real cars, and not cars that are engineered in the head of a marketeer (like a 9-4X crossover), you had your own niche in the past and I am convinced there will be room for this niche in the near future, more than ever.

I have owned 3 Saabs - I loved my first 2 - a 1974, then 1985. I now have 2001 9-3 and it is truly a love-hate relationship. The amount of repairs on it are mind-boggling - I could almost build a new car. I am wondering if there are any plans to assist those owners of Saabs under the GM banner with repairs to bring these cars back to a level where the price paid actually represents good value. My 1985 car had well over 400k before I bought my 2001 and had significantly less repairs than my 2001 with 200k (most of the repairs took place in the first 100k).

Thank you for so much for believing in the brand. I have a 93 turbo x and i live in South Africa. Please, please, please, don't forget us down her in Africa. We love SAAB's. Keep bringing them . Our local GM dealers tell us that they will continue backing the cars for the next 10 years. I say please bring the new models, all of them. Not just the parts support.

Thank you once more for saving the brand.

I'm so glad to hear Saab is coming back. I have owned three in the last 23 years (my son is still driving the 97 9-3) but bought a Volvo in 2007 because I did not like the newer models. Please bring back the hatchback.

Congratulations Spyker. I really give you guys lots of credit for saving the most unique brand on the planet. Even GM couldn't totally distroy the 9-3 and I can hardly wait to test drive the new 9-5 which I have heard so many great things about. With your continued effort, Saab will be one great and profitable brand. Best of luck, you certainly deserve it!
